ADR: THE 'LEONARDO DA VINCI', AGAIN CONFIRMED AS BEST AIRPORT IN EUROPE
ROME'S MAIN AIRPORT HONOURED FOR THE FIFTH TIME IN SIX YEARS WITH THE ACI EUROPE BEST AIRPORT AWARDS 2023
Fiumicino, 28 June 2023 - It was in a festive atmosphere that the Best Airport Awards 2023 were celebrated today at Leonardo da Vinci by the Airport Council International (ACI) - the international trade association of the world's main airports - which awarded the Roman airport as Europe's best airport for the fifth time.
The announcement was made by the CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, Marco Troncone, in the presence of more than 500 Aeroporti di Roma passengers and staff who, inside the specially prepared boarding area E, gave life to a real silent disco: a choreography with a DJ set in headphones for an afternoon of fun and entertainment open to all those present.
ACI awarded Fiumicino airport the Aci Europe Best Airport Award 2023 in the category of hubs with over 40 million passengers. This result is in addition to the recognition of "Leonardo da Vinci", which for six consecutive years has been at the top of the European ranking on the quality of service expressed directly by passengers, and to the 5 Skytrax stars awarded to the Roman airport in January this year for operational excellence and the quality of service provided to passengers.
The evaluation criteria for Best Airport 2023 focused on operational resilience and sustainability in the context of recovery from COVID-19. What made Leonardo da Vinci's victory possible were the excellent results achieved by Aeroporti di Roma on some main drivers such as sustainability and innovation.
In this context, it is worth mentioning ADR's commitment to progressively reduce the environmental footprint of its airports with the target of Net Zero Emission in 2030, twenty years ahead of what has been set at the level of the European airport sector, in addition to the company's objective of defining a path that makes the development of air transport compatible with environmental protection through the Pact for the decarbonisation of air transport, an observatory promoted by ADR with the aim of accelerating the achievement of the sector's sustainability objectives in the context of the SDGs and Agenda 2030 and which brings together industrial players, institutional stakeholders and associations, led by experts from the academic world. But also intermodality, with the development of integrated train+airplane products, the diffusion of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), the biofuel able to reduce CO2 emissions by 60-80%, and the production of renewable energy with the construction of the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plant in a European airport, which will be located parallel to runway no. 3 of Leonardo da Vinci.
On the innovation front, the main protagonist of Aeroporti di Roma's strategy, particular appreciation went to the orientation towards open innovation and digitalisation, in order to offer passengers more and more comfort and safety during their journey. In this context, the creation in the airport of the Innovation Hub dedicated to start-ups, the launch of the second call4ideas, the establishment of the Corporate Venture Capital company 'ADR Ventures', and the development of urban air mobility services with the start-up of the first connections of electric vertical take-off aircraft between the airport and Rome as early as 2024 stand out.
"Being reconfirmed as Europe's best airport for the fifth time is an extraordinary result - declared the Managing Director of Aeroporti di Roma, Marco Troncone -, the result of the daily commitment and immense passion of all our people and partners, including institutional ones, to whom special thanks are due. It is the confirmation of the commitment we have made as a company to our passengers and all our stakeholders: to build the sustainable airport of the future, to continue to ensure even greater safety, comfort and value-added services. Aeroporti di Roma continues to have its sights firmly set on the future, making use of technology and innovation while also enhancing the history and beauty that belong to the city of Rome and to Italy, so that Leonardo da Vinci increasingly becomes a mirror of our country's excellence”.
Aeroporti di Roma, an Mundys Group company, manages and develops the Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and carries out other activities related and complementary to airport management. Fiumicino, the first and only airport in Italy with a Skytrax rating of 5 stars for excellent standards in service quality, has two passenger terminals and is dedicated to business and leisure customers on domestic, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express-couriers and General Aviation activities In 2019, ADR recorded 49.4 million passengers as an airport system. (In 2022, due to the effects induced by Covid - 19 on air transport, Fiumicino Airport recorded 29.4 million passengers, while Ciampino Airport closed the year with 3.5 million passengers). Over the past six years, Aeroporti di Roma has received numerous awards, recognitions and quality certificates. The most important are the AIRPORT SERVICE QUALITY AWARD, awarded by ACI World in the category of European airports with more than 40 million passengers per year, for the years 2017 to 2022, for high levels of passenger satisfaction, and the ACI EUROPE BEST AIRPORT AWARD, category of airports with more than 40 million passengers per year, for the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023: in this case, the award rewards the achievement of excellence in several disciplines, including safety, operations, infrastructure, community relations, environmental awareness and customer care. As a result of these achievements, in 2022, ACI World included ADR in the 'Director General's Roll of Excellence', a roll of excellence to which only 69 out of more than 18,000 airports worldwide belong for the very high levels of quality offered to their passengers. SKYTRAX, in 2018 awarded ADR the WORLD'S MOST IMPROVED AIRPORT ARWARD based on the evaluation of services experienced by passengers at various airports around the world. In 2022 ADR received, again from Skytrax, the BEST AIRPORT STAFF IN EUROPE AWARD for meeting precise parameters of friendliness and efficiency of customer service staff in the terminal. ADR has also been recognised for its commitment to sustainability, receiving the United Nations World Tourism Organisation's LEADERSHIP IN SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL 2020 award. In the field of innovation, in 2021, in connection with the SESAR - Single European Sky project, ADR was awarded the ACI EUROPE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AWARD for the airport's investment in the brand new Airport Operation Centre, and the implementation of the innovation model focused on Open Innovation. In 2022, Plug and Play Tech Center, the largest private investment fund in Silicon Valley, awarded ADR the "Corporate Innovation Award" for its commitment to promoting open innovation initiatives and building an innovative "airport of the future," an award confirmed for 2023.
