Fiumicino, 7 December 2017 – A Christmas tree measuring over three metres tall which, from today until the Epiphany, can be built by passengers at Leonardo Da Vinci airport, with over 20,000 Lego bricks. For each brick, travellers can donate a voluntary contribution to many children who, throughout the world, live in disadvantaged conditions, also becoming “Friends of UNICEF”. In this we way, it will be possible to support all projects related to education, nutrition, health and child protection, everywhere in the world, with the help they need. Currently, one of the priorities is to buy and distribute winter clothes for children in Syria and their families. With a donation to UNICEF, it will be possible to continually help these children, providing heating in homes and schools during the coldest months of the year, enabling them to regain a sense of normality.
This is the first Christmas initiative scheduled by Aeroporti di Roma at Fiumicino airport. Many travellers, this morning, having found themselves in front of the unusual “construction site” in progress, have already ventured into building the giant construction. Passengers, both adults and children, were welcomed by ADR and UNICEF staff at the welcome desk set up next to the Lego tree, and have been able to decorate and build the tree, assisted by Riccardo Zangelmi, the only official “Lego artist” currently active in Italy. By the artist’s choice, the tree will bear the colours of the flag of peace.
ADR has scheduled various initiatives to entertain passengers departing and arriving during the Christmas holidays. In the coming days, there will be gospel concerts, Christmas-themed flashmobs, classical and lyrical music performances, all through the active involvement of the city's main cultural institutions. Even for this particular, innovative strategy of welcoming and entertaining passengers, Fiumicino was reconfirmed in first place in the third quarter of 2017 in the European ACI (Airport Council International) ranking for quality of services provided.
Aeroporti di Roma, Company of the Atlantia Group, manages and develops the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino and undertakes other activities relating to and supplementing airport management. Fiumicino operates through four passenger terminals. It is dedicated to business and leisure clients on national, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, by express couriers and for General Aviation operations. In 2016, the ADR airport system registered over 47 million passengers, with over 230 destinations across the world accessible from Rome thanks to around 150 airlines operating in the two airports.
