Rome Fiumicino Airport is the best in Europe for the seventh time since 2018, in the category of airports serving over 40 million passengers. The award was announced yesterday evening in Athens by the international trade association ACI (Airport Council International) Europe during its 35th General Assembly, an annual event where the 'Best Airport Award' is presented to the airports that have set themselves apart for their excellence in terms of staff, digital transformation, technological innovation and sustainability of airport infrastructure. The evaluations were carried out by an independent jury composed of 8 institutional representatives from the European aviation sector, including the European Commission, EUROCONTROL, ITF, ECAC, SESAR JU, and others.

Today 150 employees of Aeroporti di Roma, in collaboration with Legambiente, carried out a big clean-up on the Coccia di Morto beach at Fiumicino, a place where rubbish from the nearby Tiber estuary continues to concentrate. Plastic, packaging, glass, but also tyres and large household appliances are among the most frequently identified objects.

To celebrate the Catholic Jubilee, Rome Fiumicino Airport is hosting an exhibition by Davide Bramante, an artist internationally recognised for his analogue technique of multiple exposures depicting metropolises around the world. The project, called ‘Aerea’, is entirely dedicated to Rome, a city that is symbolic of the connection between histories and destinations.

ALSO AWARDED THE “G.B. PASTINE” CIAMPINO AIRPORT WITHIN THE EUROPEAN AIRPORTS WITH ANNUAL TRAFFIC BETWEEN 2 AND 5 MILLION PASSENGERS PER YEAR.

The system, designed by ADR and built by Enel, will have a power of 22 MWp, which will increase to 60 MWp with the integration of other structures over the next few years, reaching a capacity sufficient for the annual energy needs of 30,000 Italian households. 11,000 tons of CO2 saved per year immediately cut, in line with the Net Zero Carbon goal set for 2030.

In the context of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) currently taking place in Dubai, Aeroporti di Roma and Eni organised the side event “The Pact for the decarbonisation of air transport: the Italian ecosystem for a roadmap to Net-Zero”, at the Italian Pavilion. Selected among many applicants by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the side event dedicated to the Pact for the Decarbonisation of Air Transport (i.e., the observatory promoted by Aeroporti di Roma under the patronage of MIT, MASE and ENAC that brings together industrial players, institutional stakeholders and associations to promote the achievement of sustainability targets in the sector) represents an international best practice to address the challenge of decarbonisation.
