Sculpture The Last Supper

On display at Fiumicino Terminal 3 is the Easter "Vara" "The Last Supper", a historic sculpture in wood and papier-mâché made in 1885 by the Neapolitan sculptors Vincenzo and Francesco Biangardi.  Traditionally kept in the exhibition hall of the Vare in Caltanissetta, the work of art is considered one of the most famous "sacred groups" of the "Holy Week" in Caltanissetta (this year on the calendar, in static form, from 7 to 14 April) and can be admired by travellers and airport operators at Pier E of the international boarding area.

The exhibition project "The Passion in the heart of Sicily", is an initiative of the Municipality of Caltanissetta in collaboration with the Association of the Union of Bread Makers of Caltanissetta, owner of the historic Vara, with the free patronage of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, and has been made possible thanks to the contribution of Empedocle 2, a Ravenna-based construction company. The Vara "The Last Supper", a majestic work of wood and papier-mâché, made by the Biangardi family on commission from the guild of bakers and bread makers, traditionally opens the procession of the sixteen Great Sacred Groups during the rites of Maundy Thursday in Caltanissetta.  The arrangement of the 13 characters and the composition of the scene are reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's pictorial masterpiece of the same name, which inspired the Neapolitan crib makers. This sacred group is considered one of the most important from an artistic point of view.

Protected by a glass case, it is flanked by a video totem displaying a photo of Caltanissetta and photos of its main monuments, each with its own Qr Code.  A display then loops a video montage, created by videomaker Roberto Gallà, divided into two parts. With this exhibition project, the Pasqua in Caltanissetta, therefore, stands between the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, recognised throughout the world, and the communicative power of the Leonardo da Vinci, Rome's international airport, one of the world's most popular hubs.
