Leonardo da Vinci: first anniversary of transfer BHS
First anniversary of “Net 6000”, the new transfer baggage handling system inaugurated at the Leonardo da Vinci airport on 8 July 2010.
The works were managed by Aeroporti di Roma and executed by SELEX Elsag (former ELSAG Datamat), a Finmeccanica company. The equipment, implemented in four months only with a capex of 20 million euro, substantially reduced baggage mishandling or loss by 44% with respect to the previous year.
The NET 6000 is the most advanced equipment of this type ever made in Italy, and it enabled the Leonardo da Vinci airport, first in Italy and sixth in Europe for traffic volume, to obtain significant improvements in the services provided to passengers, as witnessed by the recent certificate acknowledged to ADR by IATA within the scope of the BIP (Baggage lmprovement Program) project, a program that prizes operators which recorded the highest service quality.
The “mind” of the equipment is the SELEX Elsag MBHS (Multisorting Baggage Handling System) capable of handling a flow of over 6,000 baggage units/hour; this allows to check and automatically sort transfer passengers' luggage, improving the operating efficiency of handlers who until last year performed these operations manually.
The facility extends over more than 7,000 square meters, on two levels, with 1,200 metre total length of conveyors. It features all the main functions of a BHS (Baggage Handling System): baggage loading, identification, tracking and tracing by bar code, 100% security screening and basket sorting to the 42 served bays. The importance of the equipment is proved by the following figures: 300 electric motors operating the conveyors, 450,000 kg of metal structures, 600 metres of fluid piping, 6,500 metres is the length of optical fibres, 25,000 metres the length of data cables and 65,000 metres the length of cables for baggage handling system service.
ADR commitment continues in tackling the constant traffic volume increase through technical and organizational efficiency, advocating a rapid solution to the standstill in the regulatory framework, which would allow the start of Rome airport development.
