ADR: FIUMICINO’S NEWLY RENOVATED CHECK-IN AREA AT TERMINAL ONE REOPENS FROM AUGUST 6, 2021
Aeroporti di Roma informs that Fiumicino airport’s Terminal 1 check-in area – which was closed on March 17, 2020, due to the Covid-19 emergency - will be operational again from August 6.

Aeroporti di Roma informs that Fiumicino airport’s Terminal 1 check-in area – which was closed on March 17, 2020, due to the Covid-19 emergency - will be operational again from August 6.

Despite the increase in traffic, Fiumicino remains far from its norm (In July the airport’s numbers were equal to 30% of its pre-Covid levels with peaks of around 60,000 passengers compared to 154,000 passengers 2 years ago). ADR has planned the reopening of Terminal 1’s check-in area with the aim of maximising service and safety levels, providing passengers with an infrastructure that will ensure fluidity with regards to airport operations.

Inside Terminal 1, check-in operations will be carried out for Aegean Airlines, Air Malta, Albastar, Eurowings, Ryanair and Vueling Airlines, while the baggage reclaim activities of these carriers will continue to and be carried out at Terminal 3.

All the Covid testing activities, as well as the vaccines administrated at the rapid point ‘Vax & Go’,  remain available in Terminal 3.

The Terminal 1 check-in area will reopen to traffic in a completely new configuration (flow and queuing area before security checks increased by 13% and over 360% respectively compared to Terminal 1’s previous set-up). The increase in the flow area, combined with the reopening of the 124 check-in counters in Terminal 1, allows the airport to host an additional 17,000 departing passengers under the social distancing measures currently in force. Accompanying the passengers’ journey from check-in to security checks is an LED wall system roughly 130m long (600 square meters), which students and teachers of the AANT (Academy of Arts and New Technologies) have created for the multimedia campaign titled ‘Italian History/Italian Stories’, which showcases the Italian way of life with visual displays, urging passengers to fly again. The initiative seeks to promote the beauty of our Country while highlighting the work of young talents who express Italian excellence in the arts  and is part of Aeroporti di Roma’s new strategy, highly focused on innovation.

To ensure maximum comfort, security checks include a ‘Family Lane’ dedicated to families with children and strollers,  and are equipped with innovative systems to allow for the sanitation of trays in order to give the passenger a smooth and fast transition through the area.

These new introductions represent the first step of a vast and ongoing investment program with relation to the expansion of Terminal 1 and the building of a new boarding area – which will be operational by next summer – that will be at the forefront of European travel and will make ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ airport more efficient, comfortable, safe and sustainable.

ADR kindly reminds you that, in accordance with government regulations, only passengers and airport operators are permitted to enter the airport after checking their body temperature with thermal scanners. We would also like to remind you that inside the airport (all closed rooms which are open to the public) it is mandatory to wear a protective mask and maintain a distance with others of at least one meter. This measure has been added to other initiatives adopted by ADR in order to make the airport safe and comfortable.

Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group company, manages Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and carries out other business activities that relate and add to airport management. Fiumicino has two passenger terminals and is dedicated to business and leisure customers on national, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express-couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2019 ADR recorded, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers with over 240 destinations worldwide reachable from Rome, thanks to approximately 100 airlines operating at the two airports (In 2020, following the effects caused by Covid-19 on air transport, Fiumicino airport recorded just 9.8 million passengers while Ciampino airport ended the year with 1.6 million passengers). In 2020, the Airports Council International Europe awarded the Leonardo da Vinci airport with the “Best Airport Award 2020”. For the third year running, the Leonardo da Vinci confirmed its position as the number one European hub with over 40 million passengers. The award adds to the recognition of Airports Council International World which, in 2020, presented the Leonardo da Vinci with the “Airport Service Quality 2019” award for the third consecutive year as Europe’s most valued airport among hubs with more than 40 million passengers. ADR’s management capacity is also confirmed by the awards received during 2019 from Skytrax, the leading international rating and assessment company for the airport sector, which confirmed the 4 Skytrax stars obtained by Fiumicino in 2017.
