CORONAVIRUS: FIUMICINO AND CIAMPINO, THE WORLD’S FIRST AIRPORTS TO OBTAN THE RINA “BIOSAFETY TRUST CERTIFICATION
The Rome airports are at the forefront in the procedures to contain the spread of the virus and many other pathogens

Fiumicino, 29 June 2020 – Major international recognition for Fiumicino and Ciampino airports in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 and in preventing biological risk from pathogens. The two Rome airports managed by ADR are the first airports in the world to obtain the Biosafety Trust certification, issued by the certification body RINA SERVICES, relating to the correct application of the system for preventing infection from biological agents. This recognition demonstrates how the protocols adopted at “Leonardo da Vinci” and at “G.B. Pastine” are at the forefront in the procedures for containing the spread of the virus and are an example of best practice to be used as a benchmark to minimise the risks of spreading epidemics.

This certification was obtained following a careful investigation by RINA, which examined the detailed Management System for Preventing and Controlling Infections, implemented by Aeroporti di Roma in order to contain the spread of all possible pathogens that could be transmitted within the airport, from the least dangerous viruses to the most harmful, such as Ebola, Anthrax and Sars-Cov2 (Covid-19). The RINA inspectors initially acquired all the documentation on the operating procedures and protocols at Fiumicino and Ciampino. They then checked compliance with the international reference standards on which this innovative certification scheme is based (ISO 31000 – risk management and ISO 22301 – business continuity). Lastly, they verified, through on-site inspections, the correct application of all procedures. At the end of the investigation, RINA certified: “the System for Managing the Prevention and Control of Infections at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, aimed at minimising the risk of contracting diseases, related to pathogens identified and potentially related to the following fields of activity: the provision of airport services, including management and support services (first aid, terminal services, flight control, operational safety, aircraft de-icing and hoisting activities, managing cargo at cargo city); the running and maintenance of systems and infrastructure; the management of ICT systems; commercial and real estate sub-concessions. The coordination of activities involving engineering, procurement and overseeing airport infrastructural works, assistance activities for passengers with reduced mobility, security checks, cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining green spaces, mobility services and car parks”.

We are very satisfied with this result”, said the CEO of ADR, Marco Troncone, “because it once again demonstrates the levels of excellence reached by Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, even in an essential sector such Health and Safety. It is – he added – a certification that recognises the company's effort, which, during the crisis, in addition to the protocols required by the Government, has adopted further measures to guarantee the utmost breadth and depth of the prevention interventions and to enable the capital's airports to continue to operate in conditions of utmost safety”.

Allowing the resumption of safe air transport is essential for our country's revival. We strongly believe that giving passengers and operators a tangible sign of the commitment and attention dedicated to minimising health risks is essential in order to regain their trust. By address the approach that enabled ADR to receive the voluntary Biosafety Trust certification, the company has made a gesture of responsibility”, concluded the CEO of RINA SERVICES, Paolo Moretti ”.

Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group company, manages and runs the Rome airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino, and carries out associated and supplementary activities to airport management. Fiumicino has two passenger terminals and is dedicated to business and leisure customers on national, international, and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2019, ADR recorded, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers, with over 240 destinations worldwide that can be reached from Rome, thanks to approximately 100 airlines operating at the two airports. In 2019, Airports Council International Europe awarded Leonardo da Vinci as the “Best Airport 2019”. For the second consecutive year, Fiumicino confirmed its first place in the ranking of the 20 European airports with over 25 million passengers for quality of services, technological innovation, and infrastructure efficiency. The award is in addition to the recognition of Airports Council International World which, also in 2019, for the third consecutive year, awarded Leonardo da Vinci the “Airport Service Quality” award as the most appreciated airport in Europe out of all the hubs with over 40 million passengers. ADR’s management capacity is also confirmed by the awards received during 2019 from Skytrax, the leading international rating and assessment company in the airport sector, which confirmed the 4 Skytrax stars obtained by Fiumicino in 2017.
