ACI: FIUMICINO IS THE BEST AIRPORT IN EUROPE
Leonardo da Vinci Airport ranks first amongst the 20 European airports with over 25 million passengers for its level of service to passengers and airlines, technological innovation, infrastructure efficiency, and development of new markets. London Heathrow, Copenhagen, Barcelona-El Prat, and Oslo were also in the final.

Fiumicino, 21 June 2018 – Leonardo da Vinci Airport has achieved another important international award: the “Best Airport Award 2018” was presented to the Roman airport during the Airports Council International annual assembly held in Brussels. The award was presented by a panel of distinguished independent experts in the aviation sector, including representatives from the European Commission, EUROCONTROL, the European Civil Aviation Conference, and the European Travel Commission.

The judges looked at four categories of airports – divided based on passenger traffic – and analysed their performance in relation to customer service, infrastructure efficiency, retail offer, security controls, and focus on the environment.

Fiumicino came first in the over 25 million passengerscategory, which includes the 20 main airports in Europe monitored by ACI. The other finalist airports were Barcelona-El Prat, Copenhagen, London Heathrow, and Oslo.

Leonardo da Vinci Airport’s victory was made possible due to the excellent performance levels achieved in 2017 in various areas of infrastructure and service. The improvement can be attributed to the “Atlantia treatment” initiated around four years ago, when Fiumicino was bottom of the quality classifications. The biggest improvements were seen in: comfort and quality offered to passengers (cleanliness and decoration of terminals, speed of security and passport controls, quality of the welcome in terminals thanks to the Terminal Manager); the planning and creation of new infrastructures in accordance with the most advanced sustainability standards and with no further consumption of land; the attention paid to developing new markets and new routes, which has contributed to reinforcing Rome’s competitiveness as a primary tourist destination; technological innovation applied to automating and supporting airport processes for both passengers and airlines; the international promotion of local cultural organisations (through exhibitions, book presentations, and high-quality musical performances).

This award joins those already presented this year by Skytax (“World’s Most Improved Airport” and “4 Star Airport”) and ACI (“Airport Service Quality Award”), which also confirmed Fiumicino’s solid leadership in the quality of services offered to passengers.
