Fiumicino Airport: enhanced Terminal 3 inaugurated in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini

The works carried out to enhance and regenerate Rome Fiumicino Airport’s Terminal 3 have been officially inaugurated by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini. The works started in 2021, with an investment of more than 250 million euro.

The infrastructure, operational since 1961, represents a significant example of unique architecture and engineering in the international airport panorama. The renovation project, designed and completed by ADR Infrastrutture and ADR Ingegneria, subsidiaries of Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) – a Mundys Group company – has improved the operational efficiency and travel experience for the millions of extra-Schengen flights’ passengers who transit through the airport today, in compliance with the highest standards of safety and technological innovation.

The renovation was presented to Minister Salvini during a visit at the airport with a delegation of top managers, led by ADR CEO Marco Troncone and Chairman Vincenzo Nunziata, which also included ENAC’s Chairman Pierluigi Di Palma, Ita Airways CEO Joerg Eberhart and the Councillor for Mobility, Transport and Land Protection of the Lazio Region Fabrizio Ghera. The tour included a site-visit of the Airport Operations Centre (APOC) – i.e., Leonardo da Vinci Airport’s control room, an example of technological innovation applied to airport operations.

The regeneration of Terminal 3 – preceded by the complete restyling of the façade to restore its original architectural strengths, such as visual permeability and natural light – was undertaken without interrupting the operational continuity of the airport through the 4 years of the works; it involved a total area of 41,000 square meters on three levels, comparable in size to approximately 6 football fields.

With more than 25 Italian companies involved, the restoration of T3 at Fiumicino Airport covered numerous strategic areas: specifically, 5 check-in islands with new 150 new counters have been added, bringing the infrastructure to a total of 248 counters – 60 of which are self-service; the number of luggage belts has increased (from 9 to 14), doubling of the overall length from about 400 metres to 800 metres to guarantee greater baggage handling capacity and flexibility; the security control area for high-risk flights has been equipped with 11 RX machines, and the border areas for transit flights have been upgraded. The structure of the building has also been strengthened and its systems have been modernized, with improved seismic resistance through structural reinforcements and new fire prevention systems, with over 3,100 detectors, 88 smoke extractors and 15 new air handling units; the lighting has been adapted to ensure an even more modern and functional environment.

Thanks to all these renovation works, the capacity of Terminal 3 for arriving passengers has increased by over 30%, ensuring the full operation of the area for the Summer 2025 season currently underway.

"The regeneration works at Terminal 3 are part of a medium-to-long-term infrastructure enhancement’ strategy which, over the last ten years, has led us to invest approximately 3 billion euros in Fiumicino and Ciampino airports— equal to half of all the funds invested by the whole Italian airport sector in the same period." said ADR’s CEO Marco Troncone, adding: "This is a milestone in our journey to position the Capital’s airport among the global elite in terms of service quality, while also generating significant economic and employment benefits. Looking ahead, with the goal of continuing this path and helping to elevate the international competitiveness of Italian air transport to the level it deserves, the next step will be the launch of the new Fiumicino Airport long-term development plan which envisages overall investments of a further 9 billion euro. This plan will allow us to fully and swiftly seize the major opportunities for growth in air connectivity that the country stands to benefit from."

At the beginning of April 2025, Fiumicino Airport was ranked for the first time among Skytrax’s Top 10 Best Airports in the World – 8th place, climbing 4 positions compared to 2024 – and it also re-obtained Skytrax’s 5-Star Rating, the highest recognition in the airport sector worldwide.
