ADR - ENEL ITALIA SIGN AN AGREEMENT TO WORK TOGETHER TO RELAUNCH INNOVATION, DIGITALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
Enel Italia and Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) come together for innovation: the two companies have signed an agreement to develop solutions to help achieve the objectives of the energy transition, sustainability and digital transformation in the airport sector.

The priority is to participate proactively in the change taking place, moving towards an innovative vision that will ensure the connectivity of the future takes off properly. To this end ADR, Italy’s leading airport hub and the best in Europe in the last three years, has chosen to focus on digitalization, security, innovation and environmental sustainability and has been working for some years on a path to zero CO2 emissions by 2030, ahead of the targets set by the European airport sector. The Enel Group is a world leader in the production of electricity from renewable sources and has long been committed to implementing policies of sustainability in the use of electricity, including in the field of mobility and consumption, and to encouraging the use of digital technologies so as to enable smart, sustainable growth and to use innovation and technology as tools for the country's economic and social growth.

“The agreement just signed with Enel,” commented Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, “demonstrates the willingness of two companies with a great drive towards the future to work together to identify innovative, sustainable and truly effective solutions to accompany the relaunch of the airport sector so hard hit by the pandemic. We are convinced that Italian excellence can and must work together for the transformation and relaunch of a strategic sector for our country, and today's event is the first important step on this path.”

“With this agreement,” said Carlo Tamburi, Director of Enel Italia, “we are starting a collaboration with a partner of the utmost excellence. Through the agreement signed with ADR, we will be able to share technological and innovative solutions in a fundamental sector such as airports, creating synergies that can support the strategic relaunch of the sector and the country in a sustainable manner.”

The agreement between Enel Italia and ADR aims to identify innovative digital solutions, to develop a network based on the sharing of projects and ideas. In this context, Aeroporti di Roma and Enel are positioning themselves as key players in the field of “open innovation”, making use of not only international partnerships, but also internally developed skills. It was easy to find a meeting point, as well as common goals, as both ADR and Enel have long been committed to encouraging the use of digital technologies to enable smart and sustainable growth and to make innovation and technology tools for the country’s economic and social growth. ADR and Enel have been working together for some years in different areas such as energy and gas supply, flexibility services such as demand response and electricity surplus management (GEO services).

Both companies have expressed interest in exploring, directly or indirectly, with the involvement of subsidiaries, concrete areas for the development of specific projects. The objectives set are very ambitious, but at the same time wholly specific, with the launch of technical tables aimed at jointly identifying and defining interventions on energy infrastructure elements, to achieve complete decarbonization and improve service quality and stability. This means the self-production of energy through the use of renewable sources, energy efficiency initiatives and flexibility and sustainable mobility services.

Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group company, manages and develops the Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and carries out other activities related and complementary to airport management. Fiumicino has two passenger terminals and caters for business and leisure customers on domestic, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express couriers and general aviation activities. In 2019 ADR recorded, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers with over 240 destinations worldwide reachable from Rome, through approximately 100 airlines operating at the two airports (in 2020, following the effects induced by Covid-19 on air transport, Fiumicino airport recorded just 9.8 million passengers while Ciampino airport closed the year with 1.6 million passengers). In 2020, the Airports Council International Europe bestowed the “Best Airport Award 2020” on Leonardo da Vinci. For the third year running, Leonardo da Vinci confirmed its position as the number one European hub with over 40 million passengers. The award adds to the recognition of Airports Council International World which, in 2020, for the third consecutive year bestowed the “Airport Service Quality 2019” award on Leonardo da Vinci as the most highly-regarded airport in Europe among hubs with more than 40 million passengers. ADR's management capacity is also confirmed by the awards received during 2019 from Skytrax, the leading international rating and assessment company for the airport sector, which confirmed the rating of 4 Skytrax stars obtained by Fiumicino in 2017.
