Fiumicino, 5 October 2020 - ADR announces its joining of the United Nations Global Compact, the largest international platform of Sustainability. This is the latest confirmation of the company's growing commitment to a responsible business model. A strategy that aims to integrate Sustainability into all of the company’s activities: from environmental protection, to the training of people and the commitment to local development.
“This result” said the CEO of ADR, Marco Troncone, “is a major testimony of our commitment to environmental issues and our intention to continue tenaciously on this path, convinced of the need to increasingly integrate Sustainability into our core business”.
This approach is precisely the basis of the new Master Plan that ADR shall shortly submit to ENAC (the Italian Civil Aviation Authority) and which aims to design the “Leonardo da Vinci” of the future: a competitive airport capable of capturing the future of traffic potential, that is more sustainable for the environment - with minimum land use - even more efficient and safer.
Numerous goals have been achieved in recent years in terms of environmental protection, as recently certified by the World Tourism Organization, which – for the first time ever - wanted to reward Fiumicino airport for the commitment that ADR has always dedicated to Sustainability. Starting with its leadership in separate waste collection. Few other airports can boast of a disposal of almost 90% of airport-generated waste.
Significant results have also been achieved in the management of water resources. In fact, thanks to its water reuse plants, water consumption for each passenger passing through Fiumicino decreased by 30% compared with 2012. Particular attention is also paid to the energy sector, which, as a result of the adoption of innovative technological solutions, almost 80,000 tonnes of CO2 have been saved over the last 10 years. In addition, in order to combat Climate Change, Fiumicino and Ciampino airports have obtained a certification level of 3+, the highest possible level, according to the ACA (Airport Carbon Accreditation) scheme. Lastly, as evidence of the strategic nature of Sustainability for ADR, in 2019, Fiumicino achieved the goal of decreasing its specific electricity consumption by 50% compared with 2006, being the first airport in the world to join EP100 (by The Climate Group), with the ambitious commitment to increase its energy productivity by 150% by 2026, systematising the various sustainability projects and, at the same time, dedicating an increased level of attention to the circular economy.
Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group Company, manages and develops the Fiumicino and Ciampino airports in Rome and carries out other activities related and complementary to airport management. Fiumicino operates through two passenger terminals. It is dedicated to business and leisure clients on national, international, and intercontinental routes. Ciampino is primarily used by low-cost airlines, by express couriers, and for General Aviation operations. In 2019, the ADR airport system recorded 49.4 million passengers, with over 240 destinations across the world that can be accessed from Rome, thanks to around 100 airlines operating at the two airports. In 2019, Airports Council International Europe awarded Leonardo da Vinci as the “Best Airport 2019”. For the second year in a row, Fiumicino has confirmed its first place in the ranking of 20 European airports with over 25 million passengers for its quality of service, technological innovation, and the efficiency of its infrastructure. This adds to the “Airport Service Quality” award granted to Leonardo da Vinci airport in 2019, for the second year in a row, by Airports Council International World, as the most appreciated airport in Europe out of the hubs with over 40 million passengers. ADR’s management skills have also been confirmed during 2019 by the awards received from Skytrax, the main international society for the rating and evaluation of the airport sector, which verified that Fiumicino achieved 4 Skytrax stars in 2017.
