AEROPORTI DI ROMA: THE PROPOSAL FOR A DEVELOPMENT PLAN OF MORE THAN €8 BILLION FOR FIUMICINO AND CIAMPINO AIRPORTS PRESENTED TO USERS
Today, Aeroporti di Roma presented the new proposal for the Airport Development Plan to Users of Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. Until the end of the concession in 2046, the Plan provides for an additional €8.2 billion in investments, in addition to the approximately €1.8 billion already invested from 2012 to date, for a total of approximately €10 billion.

Fiumicino, 25 June 2021 – Today, Aeroporti di Roma presented the new proposal for the Airport Development Plan to Users of Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. Until the end of the concession in 2046, the Plan provides for an additional €8.2 billion in investments, in addition to the approximately €1.8 billion already invested from 2012 to date, for a total of approximately €10 billion.

The key word of the new plan is Sustainability, with a broad spectrum from an environmental, acoustic, market, social and economic point of view. Despite the serious consequences produced by the pandemic, ADR confirms its high long-term traffic potential that can be expressed by the Rome airport system, and confirms its commitment to develop an infrastructure plan for a capacity of up to 100 million passengers at the end of the concession in 2046.

The proposed development plan - which is still being carefully examined by ENAC for applicable checks and with which a productive dialogue is underway, aimed at ensuring the best technical functionality and the best compliance with the standards of excellence already demonstrated by the airport in recent years - foresees the expansion to the east of the current airport and no longer to the north, as had previously been planned. This new project minimises land consumption in favour of the territory and optimises the existing infrastructures that will be built in compliance with the stringent LEED environmental certifications. The design solutions identified by Aeroporti di Roma for this plan are inspired by the highest quality and technological standards. Specifically, a new system for the acceptance and boarding of travellers will be activated in the coming weeks, through biometric facial identification on the routes to Atlanta and New York. The system, in addition to making transit at Fiumicino airport easier and faster for passengers, thanks to the partnership with Delta Air Lines, will be available both in Rome and in the United States, thus offering passengers on these routes a fully biometric travel experience.

In the meantime, ADR is completing the expansion of the current Terminal 1, which will have a new boarding area with 23 boarding gates, a new waiting and shopping area, 3 additional baggage reclaim belts and an entire dedicated catering area. A major renovation of Terminal 3 will also be initiated by the end of the year.

Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group company, manages Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and carries out other business activities relating to airport management. Fiumicino has two passenger terminals and is dedicated to business and leisure customers on national, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express-couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2019 ADR recorded, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers with over 240 destinations worldwide reachable from Rome, thanks to approximately 100 airlines operating at the two airports (In 2020, following the effects caused by Covid-19 on air transport, Fiumicino airport recorded just 9.8 million passengers while Ciampino airport ended the year with 1.6 million passengers). In 2020, Airports Council International Europe awarded Fiumicino’s Leonardo da Vinci airport with the “Best Airport Award 2020”. For the third year running, Leonardo da Vinci airport confirmed its position as the number one European hub with over 40 million passengers. The award adds to the recognition of Airports Council International World which, in 2020, presented Leonardo da Vinci airport with the “Airport Service Quality 2019” award for the third consecutive year as Europe’s most appreciated airport among hubs with more than 40 million passengers. ADR’s management capacity is also confirmed by the awards received during 2019 from Skytrax, the leading international rating and assessment company for the airport sector, which confirmed the 4 Skytrax stars obtained by Fiumicino in 2017.
