AEROPORTI DI ROMA CELEBRATES THE REOPENING OF TOURISM WITH THE UNITED STATES
Fiumicino, 08 November 2021 – The United States reopens its borders. From 8 November, you will be able to travel freely to the US without any specific restrictions, provided you are vaccinated and have a swab taken within 3 days of boarding. It is an important signal for the resumption of air traffic and the hoped-for return to normality that Aeroporti di Roma celebrates together with the carriers operating direct connections between the United States and the capital's airport.

From Leonardo Da Vinci, there are several direct connections for travelling to the main US cities.

The current November offer includes up to 4 daily direct flights between Fiumicino and the United States, operated respectively by Delta Air Lines for New York JFK and Atlanta, United for Newark and by ITA Airways for New York JFK. The offer is expected to increase with the addition of additional weekly frequencies in December.

In anticipation of the forthcoming summer season 2022, additional routes operated by the currently existing carriers are already on sale, in addition to the resumption of American Airlines flights.

Historically, the United States represents the main long-haul market to and from Rome Fiumicino and the 5th international market overall, after Spain, France, Great Britain and Germany. In 2019, before the pandemic, almost 2.8 million passengers flew to/from Rome Fiumicino with direct connections with 13 airports in the USA, with a growth of +7.5% compared with 2018.

The United States, therefore, represents one of the main intercontinental markets and the date of 8 November is to be considered fundamental for air transport, given that the USA represented, as early as in the summer of 2021, one of the primary intercontinental flows to recover after Covid. thanks to the possibility for American tourists to be able to enter Italy without self-isolation with the covid-tested flight protocols and, subsequently, thanks to the partial relaxation of the restrictions on entry into Italy, which came into force as of mid-June 2021. This year, in fact, almost half a million passengers resumed flying to/from the US on direct flights from Fiumicino.

The reopening of the borders of the United States for vaccinated tourists and travellers from the European Union”, said Ivan Bassato, Director of Aviation Operations of Aeroporti di Roma, “is a very positive and hopeful sign for the future. The pandemic has hit all sectors hard, but especially air transport, which is struggling to return to normal. After a year and a half in which air travel has stalled at unprecedented levels in history, the US administration's decision is a real boost for the aviation sector and a first step towards the reopening of our economies.”

Aeroporti di Roma, an Atlantia Group company, manages and develops the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino and carries out other activities associated with and supplementary to airport management. Fiumicino has two passenger terminals and is dedicated to business and leisure customers on national, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low-cost airlines, express couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2019, ADR recorded, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers with over 240 destinations worldwide that can be reached from Rome, thanks to the approximately 100 airlines operating in the two airports (In 2020, following the effects induced by Covid-19 on air transport, Fiumicino airport recorded just 9.8 million passengers, whilst Ciampino airport closed the year with 1.6 million passengers). In 2020 the Airports Council International Europe awarded Leonardo da Vinci the "Best Airport Award 2020". For the third consecutive year, Leonardo da Vinci confirmed its first place out of all European hubs with over 40 million passengers.  The award is added to the recognition of Airports Council International World which, in 2020, for the third consecutive year, awarded Leonardo da Vinci the "Airport Service Quality 2019" award as the most popular airport in Europe amongst the hubs with more than 40 million passengers. ADR's management capacity is also confirmed by the awards received in 2019 by Skytrax, the main international rating and assessment company in the airport sector, which confirmed the 4 Skytrax stars obtained by Fiumicino in 2017.
