Fiumicino, 9 December 2015 –Today, the direct flight from Rome to the city of Xi'an was inaugurated. Hainan Airlines, a private Chinese airline company certified with five stars by Skytrax, will operate this route twice a week: on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This new direct-flight service from Rome will make it possible to reach Xi'an, which is among the most important cities in Chinese history, and one of the four ancient capitals of China, famous for the Terracotta Army listed as a cultural heritage site by UNESCO.
Hainan Airlines, established in 1993, is currently the largest private airline company in China. With a fleet of more than 150 planes, including A330 wide body Airbuses and Boeing 787 Dreamliners, it connects 90 destinations in China, Europe, North America and South-East Asia. The company has also obtained numerous acknowledgements for safety, punctuality and quality of service.
The new route will be operated using an Airbus A330, which has 16 places in business class and 235 in economy class. It will offer passengers a wide range of comforts, from business class seats that recline 180° to high-definition LCD screens, as well as a wide range of entertainment options. In addition, this new flight will make it possible to rapidly travel from Xi’an to other great Chinese cities, like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The Leonardo da Vinci Airport therefore confirms its place as the top airport in Europe, alongside Charles De Gaulle in Paris, in terms of the number of Chinese cities reached by direct flights and the only airport in the European Union hosting all the major Chinese airline companies (Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Hainan). This record confirms Fiumicino's leadership in this market segment, as well as the appeal that Rome and its airport hold for passengers from the Far East.
Aeroporti di Roma, a company of Gruppo Atlantia, manages the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, and conducts other collateral activities for airport facility management. Fiumicino operates four passenger terminals. It is dedicated to business and leisure flights to and from national, international and intercontinental destinations; Ciampino is mainly dedicated to low-cost airlines, express couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2014, the ADR airports system recorded around 44 million passengers, with over 230 destinations that can be reached from Rome thanks to more than 100 airlines operating from the two airports.
