Fiumicino, 1st December 2015 – Today at the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Cardinal Agostino Vallini, General Vicar of Pope Francis, was present for the opening of the exhibition of sculptures and paintings by the artist Anna Gulak “In cammino con Giovanni Paolo II verso il Giubileo Straordinario della Misericordia” (Walking with John Paul II Towards the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy). Guido Rainaldi curated the exhibition, set up by Aeroporti di Roma in partnership with Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, with sponsorship from the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Diocese of Rome. Six paintings mounted on triangular-shaped prismatic totems and a large sculptured bust of John Paul II, in resin, are on display in a dedicated area of Terminal 1 – departures, during the Holy Year. The paintings, which reproduce the likeness of John Paul II, are accompanied with the most memorable statements that he made during his long papacy.
“I am very proud to open the celebrations for this exhibition today," said ADR's CEO, Lorenzo Lo Presti. “The airport is known as a space dedicated to arrivals and departures, but it is also the place where the passenger is welcomed. In the name of hospitality, Pope Woytila's message of love and mercy, currently presented passionately by Pope Francis, meshes with the modern environment of the Rome's airport, the first Italian hub, and now the Gateway of the Jubilee. Once again, ADR is focusing its energy on improving the quality of the time that travellers spend in our airport."
Aeroporti di Roma, a company of Gruppo Atlantia, manages the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, and conducts other collateral activities for airport facility management. Fiumicino operates four passenger terminals. It is dedicated to business and leisure flights to and from national, international and intercontinental destinations; Ciampino is mainly dedicated to low-cost airlines, express couriers and General Aviation activities. In 2014, ADR airports system recorded around 44 million passengers, with over 230 destinations that can be reached from Rome thanks to the 100 airlines operating from the two airports.
The Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, the office of the Diocese of Rome, is officially designated to organise pilgrimages all over the world. Its daily commitment to accompanying pilgrims in in their journeys forms a parallel with the support of many charity projects, in Italy and the rest of the world, to help disadvantaged populations and build churches, schools and hospitals. Today, over 80 years after it was founded, ORP is undertaking a new area in its service to the Pope and pilgrims: a renewed service to welcome pilgrims, inspired by the imminent Jubilee of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis.
