ADR: Fiumicino airport gets 5 Skytrax stars
Fiumicino Airport, rated Europe's best airport for quality for the past five years, has been awarded five stars by Skytrax, the highest accolade given by the international air transport rating organisation.

The 5-star rating, which was obtained at the end of an in-depth analysis of terminal services and facilities conducted in 2022, recognises "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport as having excellent standards in the quality of service provided to passengers and staff activity. In the last 2 years, despite the effects of the pandemic, Fiumicino Airport has consistently maintained very high quality standards, even during the period of strong traffic recovery. At the same time, the continuation of development investments was ensured, which allowed, among other things, the opening of the new boarding area A for an additional capacity of 6 million passengers, the strengthening of operational services, with new areas reserved for security and immigration controls, and the expansion of the commercial offer, thanks to new shopping and catering areas.

Skytrax applies ratings to more than 800 areas of passenger-facing airport products and services over 30 different fields. The Star Rating methodology is unified and consistent across the industry and all airports, from the largest hubs to small regional facilities, are rated using the same basic criteria covering the entire passenger travel experience. With the 5-star rating, Fiumicino joins a select group of top global hubs, including Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo and Munich.

"This recognition - declared  the CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, Marco Troncone - once again demonstrates the company's determination to effectively create the airport of the future with maximum use of innovation and new technologies, further reliability, safety and lots of comfort and value-added services for our passengers, as well as attention to the environment and our territory. Now that Fiumicino is fully in the elite of the world's best airports, we intend to reaffirm our commitment to the long-term development of the capital's airport, so that Rome and Italy can consolidate their centrality on the international scene".

Skytrax praised the operation of the terminals thanks to passengers who rated the security and immigration controls to be very efficient, also following the introduction of new systems to speed up and facilitate the route to the gates. The enhancement of the airport continues with the forthcoming reopening of Pier B in Terminal 1, scheduled for spring, after an extensive renovation to the highest standards of interior finish and decorative appeal.

The baggage claim area in Terminal 3 has also been renovated and new passenger services will be introduced shortly.  Particularly popular are the toilets, which provide an exceptional experience for passengers. The 'Leonardo da Vinci' Airport guarantees a very high standard of cleanliness and efficiency, managed directly by a cleaning team from Aeroporti di Roma.

Edward Plaisted, the CEO of Skytrax, said: 'We are delighted to award Fiumicino Airport with the 5-star rating for 2023, as only twelve hubs in the world, including two in Europe, have achieved this. Fiumicino Airport has implemented a very clear quality improvement plan over the last 6-7 years, and we are now seeing very tangible improvements in passenger facilities and customer experience. The level of detail in the changes is commendable and the airport not only offers a very good international standard, but above all contributes to enhancing Rome, and Italy in general'.
