ROME FIUMICINO AIRPORT TOPS 50 MILLION PASSENGERS IN A YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME: NOW READY FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
New record for the ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ hub, set to welcome over 2 million passengers during the Christmas holidays

Fiumicino, 21 December 2025 - Rome Fiumicino Airport has for the first time reached and surpassed the historic record of 50 million passengers in a single year. The record was achieved just before the Christmas period, during which Aeroporti di Roma – part of the Mundys group – expects to welcome an additional 2 million travellers between 22 December and 7 January, along with 180,000 expected at Ciampino ‘G.B. Pastine’ Airport. This is the first time that the ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ – which has been ranked among the world’s Top 10 most connected airports by the aviation analytics company Cirium – has handled such a high volume of arriving and departing passengers, both departing and arriving, while guaranteeing the highest standards of operational quality.

The year 2025 will therefore end with over 51 million total passengers, marking a growth of more than 4% compared with the previous year, amounting to over 2 million transits. This increase has been driven by a network of 240 destinations, with over 30 new routes launched during the year to 80 countries worldwide, operated by 100 airlines, including six new carriers that began flying to Rome Fiumicino.

Long-haul traffic remains one of the key growth drivers. North America maintained its lead, closing the year with 4.7 million passengers, boosted by a summer schedule that peaked at 40 daily departures and a strong increase in off-season travel: traffic in November and December grew by 20% over 2024 and over 75% compared to pre-COVID levels. Significant results were also seen in the Asian market, where movements increased by 16% in 2025, supported by high demand for Korea, Japan, and Bangladesh, and the return of the Hong Kong route operated by Cathay Pacific. At the same time, short and medium-haul routes continued to grow, supported by major development projects based at Rome Fiumicino, particularly from airlines such as Wizz Air and easyJet. On a strategic level, Lufthansa’s acquisition of a stake in ITA Airways marks a significant development, further strengthening Leonardo da Vinci’s role as the main hub for Southern Europe.

Recognized for the eighth consecutive time by ACI World as Europe’s Best Airport, and named “Airport of the Year” at the 2025 International Airport Summit in Berlin, Rome Fiumicino Airport is increasingly proving itself as a key infrastructure for Italy’s global connectivity and a strategic asset for the country’s long-term economic competitiveness. This positioning aligns with the vision outlined in the Sustainable Development Plan presented to the authorities, which includes over €9 billion in fully self-financed investments aimed at increasing air connectivity, ensuring the global competitiveness of the Italian airport system, and generating tangible, lasting economic and employment benefits for the local area and the country as a whole.

Reaching 50 million passengers is the result of a long-term industrial vision, strategic operational planning, consistent investment, and the hard work of a great team of people who contribute daily to reinforcing Rome Fiumicino’s standing as a world-class hub,” said Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma. “These figures confirm the vital role this five-star airport plays for Italy: a central infrastructure supporting global connectivity, tourism appeal, and national economic competitiveness. This milestone is a further driver in the implementation of our Sustainable Development Plan, a strategic project designed to ensure capacity, resilience, and sustainability for decades to come, aligned with the environmental and industrial challenges facing the aviation sector.

To celebrate this historic milestone, Aeroporti di Roma launched a campaign displayed on the screens at Rome Fiumicino Airport and published a video reel on its social media channels, serving as a symbolic tribute to all the passengers who chose and passed through the airport during 2025: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSh0nWlCDvM/?igsh=MWhicmQ0NWd4aTI3dw==.
