Development engine towards the area
Maximum attention to sustainability guides the planning, realisation and management methods of the Rome airport infrastructures. Right from the planning phase, the structures are designed according to the highest standards of energy efficiency, minimising the consumption of resources and promoting a “vertical” development of the airport, without increasing a single square metre of the ground used.
ADR reconfirms its Sustainable approach relative to the urbanisation of the area, adopting for the realisation of new structures eco-sustainable criteria provided by the LEED Voluntary Certification.
LEED is the acronym of “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”: an environmental energy certification protocol for the planning, construction, maintenance and management of sustainable buildings, born thanks to the U.S. Green Building Council in the ‘90s.
The certification process follows the entire life cycle of the structures and accompanies the project from its inception to the completion of the structure and its becoming operational. It is possible to distinguish various “phases” of the accreditation process.
During the first Registration Phase, the partners are identified, the project is registered on LEED On-line, the application is forwarded for the incentives and the production of the LEED documentation begins launching the planning process. It is followed by the “Design” phase during which the planning is begun; the documentation is collected and GBCI (Green Building Certification Inc.) reviews the project. The third phase is the “Construction” phase which includes the completion of the construction, the collection of the documentation and the review of the project by GBCI. The process ends with the Certification Phase, which anticipate the order of the LEED plate and the possibility of conducting an investigation on the well-being perceived by the occupants.
LEED uses a point system to “measure” the environmental merits of a building, through the verification of a series of pre-requisites and credit for every Subject Area.

The sum of the credits of the check list (relative to the various subject areas) determines the final score which identifies the level of certification of the building. Based on the points given, the level is obtained:
The new Boarding Area A, since in the realisation phase at Fiumicino, the General Aviation created at the Ciampino Airport and the Business city are all projects than meet the highest standards of sustainability recognised by the LEED certification.
