Monday, June 30 – This afternoon, European Commissioner for Transport and Sustainable Tourism, Mr Apostolos Tzitzikostas, concluded his mission to Italy with a visit to Rome Fiumicino Airport, recently awarded as “Best Airport” in Europe by ACI (Airports Council International) Europe for the seventh time since2018.
Commissioner Tzitzikostas, accompanied by Claudio Casini, Head of the European Commission Representation in Italy, waswelcomed at the Innovation Hub in Terminal 1 by Giampiero Massolo, Chairman of Mundys, Vincenzo Nunziata, Chairman of Aeroporti di Roma, and Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma. The Innovation Hub serves as a business accelerator and has engaged over 1,000 startups from around the world in recentyears.
After showcasing several of the innovative technologiesdeveloped within the Hub and now operational at the airport, the leadership of ADR and parent company Mundys presented the Commissioner with their vision for the future of the airport and Italy’s direct connectivity. They also highlighted ADR’s strong commitment to digital transformation, its ambitious goal of reaching NetZero by 2030, and its efforts to promote Italian art and culture within the terminals.
Thanks to these strategic priorities and investments totaling over €2.5 billion in the past decade—representing half of all airportsector investment in Italy—Leonardo da Vinci Airport, whichwelcomed around 50 million passengers in 2024, has entered the Skytrax Top 10 ranking of the world’s best airports for the first time, becoming a recognized benchmark in the global aviationindustry.
The European Commissioner for sustainable transport and tourismApostolos Tzitzikostas said: “I am impressed with the outstandingservice quality and operational efficiency demonstrated by ADR today. Rome’s airport rightly stands among the best in its class asit is a true model of sustained investment strategy that is clearlydelivering results. For the European Commission, upgrading critical infrastructure, particularly in transport, remains a top priority, both to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and to support its economic growth."
Following the meeting, the Commissioner was given a brief tour of Terminal 1, where he had the opportunity to view artworks from the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park—an example of ADR’s collaboration with the local area and its commitment to showcasing Italian cultural heritage to travelers from around the world.
Commissioner Tzitzikostas then boarded a Brussels Airlines flightbound for Brussels.
