Development plan

ADR is working for the future of Leonardo da Vinci airport. The creation of the new infrastructure is programmed to a precise schedule, to ensure over the years a balance between supply and demand and to support the constant improvement of the level of service offered to passengers.

In the first phase operations are planned in the current airport area. At a later stage, through the acquisition of new land, the airport will expand to the north. By the year 2021 the capacity of the airport is expected to increase to 50 million passengers p.a., to align Leonardo da Vinci airport with the major European airports.

In addition to the extension of the aircraft aprons and the completion of a new runway, the terminal system will also be expanded.

At the same time the Master Plan that lays the foundation for the long-term development has been completed.

The objective of ADR is to give the Mediterranean a new reference hub so that Leonardo da Vinci airport can become a transfer node of primary importance in the global context.

The Northern Development will result in an increase in total capacity of up to 50 million passengers p.a. Upon completion of the Plan total system capacity will exceed 100 million passengers p.a.

The particular nature of the planned airport infrastructure in the development area lies in the flexibility and high degree of intermodality in connections with the local area and with the city. It is expected that 50% of passengers will reach the new Airport by public transport that will be integrated and interconnected thanks to an innovative Ground Transportation Centre.

Another key element of infrastructure development is the high environmental sustainability that makes Fiumicino a powerful example thanks to its own energy production and the use of renewable energy sources, the integration of new infrastructure with the main environmental and local features, the integrated management of the waste cycle and the creation of appropriate mitigation and environmental compensation works.

In detail the Northern Development includes:

  • A new Terminal with high levels of service
  • Two new runways
  • New aircraft aprons
  • A new system of taxiways to allow a smooth flow of aircraft
  • New high-tech power plants to guarantee self-production of 85% of the entire energy needs
  • Production of electricity from renewable sources equal to 30% of requirements
  • Thermal energy production from renewable sources equal to 50% of requirements
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions by about 15,000 tons p.a.
  • Creation of a 50-hectare environmental park
  • A new system of accommodation facilities, commercial activities, services and parking
