PRIMO PIANOMasterplan of Fiumicino North new airport 15 of January 2010 ADR started the procedure for the publication of the international call for tenders for the preparation of the Masterplan relating to the development of Fiumicino airport in the North side by 2044. From today until June 2010, in line with all leading international airports (Madrid, London, Berlin, Paris, Munich, Beijing, Seoul, Singapore, Dubai, Jeddah, etc.) it will offer to the leading world airport infrastructure planning and engineering groups the opportunity to work on an important project that will contribute to improve competitiveness in Italy, providing the Mediterranean region with a new reference hub and guaranteeing to Europe a new point of exchange between continents. The project envisages to enlarge the airport area by further 1,300 hectares in addition to the current 1,400, in order to meet the requirements of air traffic growth that in Rome is expected to hit 55 million passengers by 2020 and 90-100 million passengers by 2044. New terminals will be required for a surface of about 1,000,000 sqm, designed according to the most modern technology and equipment standards, with the quality, design and excellence typical of "made in Italy" products, that will strongly improve service quality for passengers, carriers and airline alliances. The new railway station will be included in the terminals, allowing direct connection with Rome city centre, in addition to an automatic people mover station that will connect the new airport facilities with the current terminals in the south side, ensuring full integration between the various existing traffic components (domestic, international, intercontinental flights) and becoming a useful part of the local transport network. The new air terminals will be provided with at least 100 boarding gates, 70 per cent of which with a loading bridge. The capacity increase related to 2044 traffic forecasts envisages the construction of two additional runways, beside 140 new aircraft parking areas and a new taxiway system to allow smooth aircraft outflow. By 2044, Fiumicino airport (consisting of the new complex and the current facilities) will be characterised by the following:
The Masterplan will focus on environmental sustainability issues. Fiumicino shall develop as a technological hub with low or even zero emissions and shall be a virtuous example of noise control and integration and respect of landscape, environmental, cultural and archaeological assets. The Masterplan will also include all the service works connected with aviation and non-aviation related activities, such as: buildings and accommodation facilities (congress centres, hotels, offices, office and service/light industrial structures, etc.), car parks for passengers, visitors and airport staff, next to the back-up structures needed to support all future development plans. The Masterplan is the architrave of the development and investments plan that ADR officially submitted to the Government together with SEA at Villa Madama on 14 October 2009, representing one of the stages of a process centred on parliamentary debates about the future of the Italian airport system. The call for tenders already forwarded to the Official Journal of the European Union together with its relevant documentation is now available on the website.
