EXCAVATIONS IN OSTIA ANTICA The excavations of the XIX and XX centuries allowed to understand the urban and architectural structure of the city of Ostia in its whole and gave an exhaustive image of the aspect and function of each building.
The cautious and correct explorations of the first years of 1900 were followed, with an increase of means and on the basis of a cultural policy made to comply with the imperial dreams of fascism, the era of the so-called “big excavations”, in view of the imminent Universal Exposition of Rome that would have occurred in 1942 and for which Ostia was destined to be the archaeological core.
