TRAIANO'S PORT
Trajan’s Port was placed in the centre of an internal dock, connected to the sea through the oldest dock used as a filter and to the Tiber through the artificial canal (Trajan’s hole, today canal of Fiumicino). The eastern sector of the territory is by this time private: the State property part, even if it is the part with more monumental emergencies, does not include, up today, the great hexagonal dock, the hub of the ancient plant. The structure of the Port had foreseen, that the load vessels, coming from west-south-west into Claudius’ dock, would direct through the wide entry canal to the mooring places of the two banks or to those more internal of the hexagonal dock. The goods would be partially stocked and partially transferred onto river transport boats which would leave the port through a conjunction canal with the external hole, and from there they would reach the Tiber and would go up stream up to the Roman ruins.
Ticket: the payment of the ticket is currently suspended. The visits to Trajan’s Port are thefore free, but they are allowed only with the guide of the guardian staff. Duration of the visit: 2-4 hours, according to the itinerary.
