MACCHIAGRANDE

Photo: Oasi MacchiagrandeThe Oasis, which extends for 280 hectares, is managed by the Cooperative Darwin on a mandate from WWF Italia. The Cooperative is made up of biologists and naturalists with proved professional skills and experience and who have been caring of the management of protected areas and environmental education for many years.

Environment
The Oasis is made up of various environments; from the Mediterranean bush back-dunes and a Mediterranean wood among the most beautiful and best kept on the Roma shore; in the wet areas there is still a very interesting and precious hygrophilous wood, one of the most extended among the woods on the shore. The drainage canals represent important substituted of flows of natural water and of wet areas. There are, furthermore, uncultivated fields and a pine wood.


Flora and fauna
The flora includes dune pioneer plants and trees such as: sea plantain, the sea lily; on the top of the dune. In the area back-dunes we remind you: the crouching jiniper, the Phoenician jiniper, the rosemary, the mastic tree, the myrtle and the laurel; the wood is populated by helm oaks, and in the humid areas there are many kinds of poplars. There are also, many kinds of wild orchids. The water avifauna is very rich with: the mallard, the teal, the cormorant, the heron and the red heron. Among the birds of prey, the kestrel, the fishing  hawk and the buzzard. There are even many passerines from the brush and the wood. Among the mammals there are the following animals: the porcupine, the wild rabbit, the fox, the stone marten and the rice-field mouse. In the brush you can meet many exemplars of common turtles, symbol of the oasis.

Opening from October to May with guide tours on Sundays at 10:00 a.m and at 02:00 p.m.. For schools and groups, the Oasis is open everyday upon appointment. Special activities are foreseen, above all in Summer, for further information contact the Oasis Office.

A trail equipped to recognize the characteristics of the environments of the oasis and of  animals and trees populating it.


The coast dune
A special track through one of the most threatened environments by the Tyrrhene shore which at Macchiagrande is still in excellent conditions in all its natural aspects.


Subject visits
They are planned on some aspects of biology (observation of avifauna, food chains, systems and biological apparatus of the beings, microscopy), in order to deepen the subjects useful to the comprehension of nature.


The life of bees and the biologic apiculture
Through the modern bio-apiculture techniques, a meeting to know bees and honey.


One day visit
During a day spent together in the oasis, you can go through a didactical itinerary to know nature in its most hidden aspects.


Sense trail
Through sense games and experiences the discovery of nature and of man as its component.
The New Mediterranean Tree Nursery
You can deepen your knowledge in lab on the naturalistic tree nursery techniques.


Summer holidays centres
The main mission of WWF consists on the commitment in the safeguard of nature through educational environmental programs, summer fields and stays inside the oasis and the natural Parks.
The territory of Fiumicino, besides the bathing attractive, can offer to young also the possibility of an alternative summer at the sign of nature.


The Oasis of Macchiagrande organizes daily visits which represent an alternative way to spend some days completely in the green.The stays are for participants between 7 and 12 for five days, from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. (arrival at 8:00 a.m ) at 04:30 p.m. (with departure up to 05:00 p.m.), with pocket lunch provided by the participants.

The field activities are the following:

  • excursions in the woods to learn and distinguish trees and animals;
  • realization of plaster casts from leaves or animal marks, an herbarium of the flora, and a little ternary;
  • games and amusement: the naturalistic treasure hunt; composition of paintings and naturalistic drawings;
  • lessons to learn and orientate by the aid of the sun and to keep the little naturalist’s notebook.
