Despite a -5% drop in the demand for tourism services, which marked the end of 2008, the Eternal City is performing better than other European capitals, also owing to the impressive choice of events offered. The festive season, across the last two weeks in December, made up for a drop in tourist stays, having registered a 40% rise in tourist influx, confirming Rome’s primacy in Europe.
In the top ten list of foreign tourists coming to Rome, the USA rank first, followed by Spain, Japan, the UK, Germany and France.

Not to be missed: the exhibition that Scuderie del Quirinale dedicates to Futurism during the month of February. Spring will be inaugurated in March with an exhibition dedicated to the inventor of the Colosseum, emperor Vespasian Flavian.
In March, internationally famed singer Laura Pausini will be performing in Rome as part of her world tour 2009. After playing at the inauguration of Barack Obama as new President of the United States, Bruce Springsteen will kick off his latest world tour with a long-awaited concert, which includes a date in Rome during the month of July.
Instead, the FINA world swimming championships, held between July and August at Foro Italico, will entertain sports fans.
Last but not least, shopping: the January sales attracted tourists, who were given a chance to take advantage of discounted Made in Italy branded designer labels available from the elegant shops of the city centre, and from Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports Shopping Gallery.
